Though initially disappointed by one of the five cigars we received in our monthly club delivery, it turned out to be the highlight! Keep reading for our full Gotham Cigar of the Month Club review…
Packaging & Freshness
We were a little concerned when we first received our first monthly delivery. It came in a padded package without any protection to keep the cigars safe from being bent or squished. Thankfully, upon opening the package, we found that the cigars had all made it to us safe and sound – they were all in good condition.
There was no humi-pack to keep the cigars properly humidified during shipping though. Again, we were relieved to find that the cigars seemed to be no worse for the wear, though we promptly stashed them in our humidifier to let them rest.
Cigar Selection & Newsletter
Here is the lineup of cigars we received:
- Acid Kuba Kuba Maduro
- Alec Bradley Tempus Inceptio
- Gotham Heroes Alec Bradely Robusto
- Oliva Serie G Robusto
- Partagas 1845 Extra Fuerte Robusto Gordo
As mentioned, we did a double take at first when we saw the Gotham Heroes stick. We’d never heard of the Gotham line of cigars (for good reason, it is brand new!) and we assumed it was a bargain house brand – which would have been a major disappointment considering we were expecting 5 premium cigars. Once we found out that it was made by Alec Bradley at the Nestor Plasencia factory in Esteli, Nicaragua – we were excited to try it.
It didn’t disappoint! It was a wonderful smoke. Smooth, easy draw. An immediate hint of sweetness that lasted throughout. Very subtle spice. A nice even burn and firm ash. All in all, a fantastic cigar. We were so impressed in fact, that we immediately went to Gotham’s website to check out pricing so we could consider buying more. What a delightful surprise to find that they were on a special sale (check out the deal here!).
The newsletter is simple but effective. It gives the essential info about each cigar and some very brief tasting notes. Here is a PDF version if you want a closer look: Gotham Newsletter
Overall Experience
We joined the club through the Groupon deal that Gotham has going. We tried to apply our Groupon through Gotham’s website, but we had issues. A quick phone call to their support got us squared away. Their support was pleasant and easy to deal with.
The package was shipped that very day and arrived on our doorstep 3 days later. We were very impressed by their speedy order processing!
Since we used the Groupon deal to get our membership, it was not setup to automatically renew, and therefore we were not able to experience the cancelation process. However, it seems a quick call or email to their support is all it takes to cancel, and if our initial dealings with their support team are any indication – canceling would be easy and painless.
Value
The total retail price of the 5 cigars we received is $31.65.
If you are able to snag the Groupon deal, you’ll be getting the Gotham Cigar of the Month Club for only $23.99. This includes 5 cigars, free shipping, newsletter, matches and cigar cutter. A stellar deal!
At their regular club price of $29.99, Gotham falls in line with the majority of the other Cigar Clubs out there as far as price and perks go – a good overall value.
Our Take
You’d be crazy not to snag the Groupon deal while you still can. This is by far one of the best values you can get for your money! We wish they shipped their in more protected packaging and with a humi-pack, but overall, we were very impressed by the club.
